Emotional Health in Children During Times of Immigration Uncertainty

Dr. Paula De La Rotta Pérez was featured on Univision – El News Café to discuss how immigration uncertainty can affect children’s emotional health.

During the interview, she explained how stress and anxiety may appear differently depending on a child’s age and developmental stage. Some children may show changes in behavior, difficulty with attention, sleep disruptions, emotional regressions, increased fears, or changes in mood.

From a pediatric neuropsychology perspective, Dr. De La Rotta shared how chronic stress can impact the developing brain and why children need safe, age-appropriate support during times of uncertainty.

The conversation also included practical guidance for parents, caregivers, and professionals, including how to filter the information children receive, validate their emotions, maintain routines, and create a sense of emotional safety at home.

This interview highlights the importance of supporting children not only academically and developmentally, but also emotionally, especially when families are navigating fear, uncertainty, or major social stressors.
